When I started my career in London as a junior Art Director, along with Roger Beckett as junior Copywriter, we joined one of London’s most exciting and, luckily for us, democratic creative departments. The best idea wins was the method used by Creative Director Sir John Hegarty.
This gave young hopefuls like Roger and me the chance to work on all the agency’s business. It wasn’t long before we were asked if we had any good ideas for a Levi brief. We didn’t, but we stayed late until we thought we had one.
The print campaign is just one example of the work that typifies my early career at Bartle Bogle Hegarty. I’m immensely proud of my time there and the work I did. I’ve never thanked John personally for the chance he gave me, but I will one day. The images were taken in New York and shot by Magnum photographer Eugene Richards. I hand coloured them myself.
